Terrence McKenna (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrence_McKenna) was an early proponent of Singularity-like ideas. Namely (through ill-founded crackpot numerology) he created Novelty Theory (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novelty_Theory) which bears quite a resemblance to Kurzweil's Law of Accelerating Returns. The difference is he started doing all of this in the early 1960s.

Re: Terrence McKenna: Twit or genius?
Thu, December 14, 2006 - 8:01 PMTerence: genius!
it's very hard to decode his views on the sigularity right from the get-go, but he is by no means a pessimist or body-loathing or one of those things. in fact very very human, in the wonderful sense of the word.

Re: little bit of this and a little bit of that
Mon, January 12, 2009 - 4:36 AMI was going to say both, too. I think you must smoke DMT at least 3 times to get a feel for what he's talking about. I did. I don't think I wanna go back there, to that "place".

Re: Terrence McKenna: Twit or genius?
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 11:14 PMI had a Chance to See him lecture years ago... TOTALLY Captivating... and he told us that the Mushroom had showed him the "transendental object at the end of time... "
He said that the closest thing we have in our world to it... was the Mirror Ball.
I thought he was BRILLIANT.
the Article he did for the lifestyles Section of the New York Times... Bears my image.
