Do you ever wonder if maybe the singularity already came and no one noticed?

      Such would leave a sign.

The Singularity couldn't have happened Josh because then this thread title would have automatically been spelled right or at the very least an edit option would be present. ;~)

As for a sign Doug what do you have in mind?

I don't understand that the singularity has to be perceived at the time of its occurence in order for it to take place. Whoever invented the wheel may have assumed that the device was already broadly in use among far-off villages.

Something unprecedented yet evident, speaking in general.

Humanity spacebound to never leave it behind empty, speaking more particularly. That'd be one such in my mind, since you asked. :-)

I actually decided to read the book,
"A Brief History of Nearly Everything" by Bryson
before reading the "Singularity is Near"

I figured it would make more sense knowing a little about where the universe has been before contemplating where it's going.

I'm reading "Singularity" right now. It's a gas. I've read Kurzweil's other books, and it's fun to watch them track actual progress.
Hans Moravec's books are good too. I hope he writes more.
Or just keeps working on those robots! Yeah, that would do.

                    Just finished.
Did you know that you can make 80 Gigadollars by following some of the advice in the book? That's worth the purchase price.

Yes, but when do I get to copy the contents of my brain onto some more durable substrate than this primate form that I occupy?

But then again, all I would do is go find a virtual shady lowland glade full of fruits, stems, flowers, shoots, bulbs, bark, and leaves. And a harem of virtual comely ape-ladies.

I knew that Kurzweil is an inventor par excellence. But what is his track record as an investment advisor? Has he parlayed his futurist prognostications into a pile of dough?

He says that he originally began charting the advance of technology so that he would be smarter about when the time was ripe for technologies that he wanted to develop. It seems like it worked o.k. for him. He has done well with his electronic pianos and his reading software.

I've been reading it. Quite interesting, if somewhat arid.

What I want to know: Will I get laid?
    • Re: The Sigularity is Near

I just finished the section about virtual reality and he talks a lot about sexual relations. He suggests virtual prostitution will be legal, we can have sex with a virtual simulation of anyone we want, and we can have the body of anyone we want.

So the chances of you getting laid are fairly strong, or should I say virtually inevitable!
